Winner of the Colima 1980 National Narrative Award for his first novel Violeta-Perú, and the Colima 1988 Latin American Narrative Award for his third novel, Este era un gato, Luis Arturo Ramos's name appears frequently beside that of Carlos Fuentes, being included as one of the most important writers in Mexico. He has served for the last thirteen years as the director of the University of Veracruz's Editorial Universitaria, one of the most important publishing houses in Mexico. He is currently a professor of creative writing at the University of Texas at El Paso.
