Breakthrough was originally published in Chile as La Brecha, in 1961. The novel was considered a revolutionary departure from the traditional treatment of the feminine role in marriage and caused a controversial reaction: dismay from the reactionary segment of society and loud applause from the critics. It enjoyed an unexpected publishing success and went through five consecutive editions. The book is critically regarded as the first feminist novel of Latin America. (See La Brecha).

"Published in 1961 this novel challenged the traditional notion of 'a woman's place' and was the forerunner to a more militant assertive expression of the role of women in Latin American fiction."
--British Bulletin of Publications

"An outstanding translation ....Boulevard of Heroes offers an insightful voyage into the soul of Latin America's radical, old-time activists....the novel resonates with echoes of Julio Cortázar's Hopscotch, Miguel Angel Asturias's El Señor Presidente, and Demetrio Aguilera-Malta's Babelandia: forgotten military heroes have insatiable love affairs in a universe without logic....[t]his Colombian writer is without question a powerful storyteller...."
--World Literature Today

"The most interesting points here are not about politics but about life in exile."
--Publishers Weekly
